Before Jamie Dornan there was Charlie Hunnam who was supposed to portray the role of Christian Grey in the popular series “Fifty Shades of Grey” The 34-year-old actor left the “Fifty Shades of Grey” movie for his hit television show “Sons of Anarchy”. Charlie Hunnam recently revealed that the move was heartbreaking one. He told Life & style at Huading Film Awards in Hollywood earlier this month that “I felt like I had an interesting take on that character and felt like I could have done a good job of playing Christian Grey, otherwise I wouldn’t have taken it on in the first place.” He added, “When you put the time into something like that and a character comes alive in your mind, it’s heartbreaking not to be able to play him. It was definitely kind of heartbreaking having to say goodbye to that character and not bring it to life.”
E.L James the author of “Fifty Shades of Grey” confirmed that the British actor and the actress Dakota Johnson would play the role of Christian Grey, a sadomasochistic billionaire and Anastasia Steele, a college graduate. Just after one month, Universal Pictures announced that Charlie Hunnam has exited the film because he was also shooting the FX series Sons of Anarchy and upcoming movie “Crimson Park.” Bristish Hunk said it was a hard choice to drop the biggest role of the decade. He said he is still missing the character that was his for a month.
When asked Hunnam about his replacement he told “I’m sure he’ll do a great job. I don’t really know his work. But I know Sam Taylor-Johnson the director of Fifty Shades is amazing. She has fantastic taste so I’m sure he’ll do a great job.” British Hunk also confessed that he is not worried about Dornan taking the role of 27-year-old billionaire.”I certainly don’t fear it. I already got a glimpse into working with director Sam Taylor-Johnson at the test, and I’d met co-star Dakota Johnson by then. So I had a glimpse into how I felt it would be if I got the part. None of it scared me.”
Hunnam’s decision to pull out of the movie came as a surprise to fans as he told about how excited he was to be cast in the upcoming best selling blockbuster opposite Dakota Johnson, who plays the role of Anastasia Steele weeks before the announcement. Despite not being a part of the movie adaptation of “Fifty Shades of Grey” which is the E.L James best selling trilogy. Hunnam said he will still be in the theatre when the movie comes out. “If they invite me to the premiere, I will go and see it there,” he said. “If not, I’ll go and buy some tickets on opening night.”
The movie Fifty Shades of Grey penned by E.L. James will hit the theatres on February 13, 2015 just a day before the Valentine’s Day. Jamie Dornan will play the role of Christian Grey and Dakota Johnson will play the role of Anastasia Steele, a virginal college graduate. The movie is directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson.
